I took a look at this and the feature will be great on a widescreen monitor but for those of us still using the old 4:3 ration monitors, not so much.  The setting can be tweaked a bit, but on my 17", 1024×768, it was just a mess.  For now I’ll just have to wait to get the widescreens, but the Gmail team just never stops.  One thing they have done that I truly love are the new buttons.  The look is much nicer, in fact I would love to have navigation like that on my own web site.  Also the functionality of the buttons is much easier too.
